Chronometer N. 17 by Pennington, Pendleton and Others for the son of the inventor, made in 1797. Thomas Mudge Jnr. organised the production of some 26 copies of his father’s timekeepers but the spring remontoire escapement was too difficult to manufacture and most were converted to have a platform escapement fitted with Eartshaw’s detent escapement.
The instruments have exceptionally elegant dials with repousse silver decoration. Mudge Jnr. Lost of money on the enterprise because simpler instruments were being manufactured by Arnold and Earnshaw which cost less than a third the amount asked for one of this series.
