Cruciform watch in silver, embossed and gilt, brass movement; France, c. 1630; dia. 2½” (6.35 cm.).
The earliest watches were probably drumshaped; later, cases were made in the form of stars, animals, books and other objects, such as the cross shown here. Note the substantial hinge and the lugs to locate the movement in the case. The dial has a narrow chapter ring and a tasteful hour hand. Its centre design consists of four cherubs representing the four winds; the rest of the dial is decorated with religious motifs. The watch has an outer leather case.
