Watch, open to show movement, enamel decorated case (prob. French made), movement by East; London, England, c. 1640; dia. 1⅝” (4.13 cm.).
Although early, this is a step nearer the modern watch in appearance. The movement is circular, the cock is held by a screw, the pillars are of the Egyptian style favoured later in the 17th century and the support for the mainspring set-up is finer, having a worm gear with indicator disc instead of a simple ratchet. The old type of train is retained, containing one arbor fewer than watches made after the introduction of the balance spring.
