The Rolex Submariner-Date is an officially certified chronometer, selfwinding and guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 300 m/1,000 feet. It is the trustworthy chronometer for the diver. The Rolex Submariner-Date is equipped with a rotatable, notched and graduated bezel which can only be rotated anti-clockwise so as to avoid any accidental movement which could be dangerous. In this way, the only possible consequence is that the diver spends less time under water. The Fliplock bracelet with extension links makes it possible to wear the watch over a diving suit.
The Triplock winding crown is protected against accidents by shoulders which are an integral part of the case. The crystal is made of extremely hard synthetic sapphire. The date changes automatically at midnight.
On dry land, the rotatable bezel makes it possible to measure the length of a telephone conversation or the time a car is parked. But the chief reason for its existence is infinitely more important for it allows the diver to rigorously time decompression stages, where precise timing could literally be a matter of life or death.
The illustration on the left shows the watch with the bezel in its usual position. On the right the watch is shown with the triangle next to the minute hand. This is where the diver should position it the moment he begins his dive. Knowing how long his air will last he is always able to see how much air he has used up and to know when he should begin his ascent. The first fifteen minutes on the bezel are marked individually so that the diver can precisely time his decompression stages.
